Dusk is the most beautiful time to be on the waters of Casco Bay. This tour offers a leisurely guided paddle just far enough into the nearby islands to have a panoramic view of the sun setting over the city as the group paddles back to the beach. We'll look out for wildlife -- including seas and seabirds -- and we'll enjoy gorgeous views of many of the most striking sites in Portland harbor. This two-hour tour is designed for paddlers of all experience levels -- including first-time kayakers. The Sunset Tour begins roughly two hours prior to sunset with the small group gathering at Portland Paddle's site at the East End Beach. You'll meet your guide and get geared up with life jackets, paddles and dry bags to keep anything you're bringing dry. After taking a look at the route on a map, your guide will provide a brief lesson on sea kayaking and help you select a kayak. We often use tandem (two-person) kayaks for our shorter trips because they are more stable and spacious than solo kayaks and easier for novice paddlers to use. If you prefer a solo kayak and have some sea kayaking experience, let us know when you book your trip. We have boats for all body types and skill levels.

Once everyone is in their boats, you'll launch onto the water. The group will start by paddling along the coastline as a group, making sure that everyone is comfortable in their boats before we head away from shore.

The exact route you take will depend on the weather conditions and the group's interests and experience, but the Sunset Tour often starts out venturing into the waterfront of Portland harbor, where we get a close-up look at the bustling wharves lined with schooners, lobster boats and other maritime activity. From there we tend to paddle into the open waters towards the islands of Casco Bay, often far enough to get good views of several lighthouses and the granite walls of Fort Gorges.

Throughout your trip your guide will share their deep knowledge of the region's natural and cultural history. They will also be happy to help you improve your kayaking skills. And their top priorities will always be making sure the group is staying safe and having fun.

The tour will end up back at the East End Beach just before darkness begins to fall over the city. If skies are clear, you'll have a perfect opportunity for a photo just before you get off the water, as the sun sets behind you.
