The New Hampshire State House achieved its present-day appearance through an evolution that required almost a century. In the near-century since its final transformation, the building has changed little. Long touted as “the oldest state house in the nation in which the legislature still occupies its original chambers,” the New Hampshire State House embodies many other distinctions. As the first substantial granite building in New Hampshire, the building stood as a showpiece for Concord’s nascent granite industry. It was built according to designs by Stuart J. Park, then New England’s foremost expert on granite construction, and its stone was split and hammered by inmates at the state prison. Its interior finish and furnishings were the work of many local craftsmen as well as artisans from Boston.

The Millyard Museum features the permanent exhibit, Woven in Time: 11,000 Years at Amoskeag Falls, that tells the story of Manchester and the people who have lived and worked here. The story starts with the native peoples who fished at Amoskeag Falls 11,000 years ago. It continues with displays on the area's early farmers and lumbermen, and the beginnings of industry in the area. The exhibit continues with the story of the development of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. This powerful corporation would become one of the largest textile producing company in the world, employing over 17,000 people, including immigrants from many countries. The company's vast brick millyard still dominates the cityscape today. The story continues into the 20th century, as innovative businesses flourish in the city and new groups of immigrants come to Manchester to start new lives.

The Amoskeag fishways houses an impressive interactive exhibit hall that allows visitors to explore the Merrimack River. The exhibits focus on the Merrimack River watershed, historical use of the Amoskeag area, and river wildlife. Visitors can view live turtles, frogs and salmon, play a salmon migration game, generate electricity, and more. In May and June, visitors can experience the unique opportunity to view migrating shad, herring and sea lamprey in our underwater viewing windows.

After a stop for an included lunch in Manchester we will travel to Merrimack for a tour and tasting of the Anheuser Busch Brewery. A highlight of the day is a photo opportunity with Clydesdale horses. Of Anheuser-Busch’s 12 U.S. breweries, this brewery is in the prettiest setting, located in the picturesque Merrimack Valley. It can package 8 million 12-ounce servings in 24 hours.
