For the first time ever, enter the city of Pompeii after closing time. This 12.5 hour, all-inclusive day trip from Rome takes you on an exclusive exploration of the lost city. Once the sun sets you’ll use torchlight to pick out details in the houses, death casts and ruins of this incredible (and now peaceful!) ruin. You'll also enjoy a guided tour of Naples plus pizza dinner along the stunning seafront.

Leaving Rome at lunchtime you’ll board a minibus (with maximum 13 other guests and a tour leader) and head straight for the sunny south of Italy. You’ll stop along the way to take photos over the Bay of Naples before entering the city.

In previous decades Naples gained an unsavory reputation but the city has worked hard to clean its act up. Today Naples is as beautiful and welcoming as any Italian town, as you’ll see on your guided walking tour. Led by your expert tour leader and traveling in small groups, you won’t risk getting lost as you weave through the lively alleyways of the historic center; spotting beautiful architectural features and catching lines of folk music floating on the air.

This is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city, so you can bet it has a story or two to tell. Finish your Naples walking tour at dramatic Piazza Plebiscito and the city’s “New Castle” (first erected in 1275) before taking a seat at a fantastic seafront restaurant for Naples’ other great attraction – pizza!

Fortified and back on the bus for a short ride, your journey continues to the real highlight of the day. You’ll be among the first visitors ever to visit Pompeii at night, joining a group of maximum 35 people for an exclusive tour of the city, led by an official Pompeii guide.

Because you’re visiting after hours, you won’t stick to the standard well-trodden route. Instead you’ll embark on an exploration of the other side of the city, uncovering such secret sights as the new ‘Nile in Pompeii’ exhibition; the huge gymnasium (a perfect place to learn about daily life in Pompeii); the palatial home of Octavius Quartio aka Loreius Tibiurtinus, with its immense decorative gardens and Egyptian statues; and the house of Venus Marina, known for the impressive fresco that gave it its name. With a flashlight for every guest, you’ll get more from such visits as the one you pay to the Complex of Giulia Felice, a Roman hotel with spa and an original dining space called a “triclinium”. Here you’ll shine a light on areas missed by visitors during the day, uncovering the details of daily life in Pompeii.

Over 3 million visitors trek through Pompeii every year. Of this traffic, most is concentrated during the hot, crowded summer months. Although your tour of Pompeii is relatively short (1 hour), you’ll see and learn so much more than a standard visitor. In the fading light of day, you’ll enter a mysterious and beautiful Pompeii previously only known by archaeologists: A peaceful, lost city unchanged in the last 2,000 years.

At 10pm you’ll hop back on your bus for the sleepy 2.5 hour ride back to Rome, where your driver will leave you at a central point from where you can easily take a taxi.
