Take as long as you like while walking and hiking, self-guided through amazing geothermal activity inside a volcano. You will see a wonderful array of hot springs, native forest, special thermal plants and birds set amongst the incredible colours created by the geothermal activity.You can park your vehicle in the car park at the entrance and check in at the reception. From here you can walk quietly along the safe clearly marked paths, 4km from the reception to the end of the path at Lake Rotomahana.

Within the seven volcanic craters which make up Waimangu are world unique geothermal features, specifically including Frying Pan Lake and Inferno Crater Lake. You will also view beautiful geothermal terraces, hot springs and steam vents all set amongst a beautiful native forest and grassland.
Waimangu is also home to every type of thermally adapted plants know in New Zealand, which live on the hot earth.
Abundant bird life lives at Waimangu and especially on Lake Rotomahana which is a wildlife refuge.

The hiking trail is also an option for fit and able visitors.

When you reach Lake Rotomahana you can return to the reception in the complimentary shuttle bus.  There is an excellent souvenir & gift shop and café at the entrance / reception.

It is recommended that you wear good walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather and water.
