Hike the trails in El Rey National park as your guide highlights the unique flora and fauna in the park.Start your tour with pickup from your hotel (selected hotels only) at 8am. Travel outside the city of Salta in a 4X4 vehicle, approximately 125m (200km), to El Rey National Park. Arrive at the park at 10:30am and be greeted by a park ranger. Reach the trail-head for Popayan, approximately a 9.5m (15km) drive into the park. Take a 45-minute ride on the Popayan trail, which can only be done by 4X4 because the road crosses streams and rivers.
Stop in the Popayan area, where the Popayan River and the La Sala River can be enjoyed. See how when the waters run clear you are able to spy the local inhabitants of the rivers. Spy the breams, catfish, gold fish and shads that call this area home. Enjoy the Chaco forest and transition forest. Return to the trail-head, after your Popayan area visit.
Rest surrounded by the beauty of El Rey National Park, while eating your box lunch (own expense). Head north to see Casacada of Lobito. Journey to the mountain jungle on the road to Pozo Verde. Reach higher elevations, approximately 4593ft (1,400m), and see the difference in vegetation. Admire the variety of flora that can only be found at such high altitudes, such as the Cedars and Laurels. Explore the jungle habitat that is home to pumas, tapir, peccary (wild pigs), otters and several species of birds. Spot magpies, herons, kingfishers, ducks and coots.
Drive back to Salta at 3:30pm. Arrive at your hotel approximately by 6pm.
